Welcome to the show.
In light of the tragic shootings in Dayton and El Paso over the weekend, we start off with a prayer from our dear friend, Kevin Keifer, our special guest and principal of Bishop Gorman Catholic High School here in Las Vegas. We believe that despite the political leanings of the shooters (one left-leaning, one right-leaning), these were not truly politically motivated. Rather, these lost souls were the victims of lifelong neglect and abuse. On a wider scale, this is emblematic of a huge problem, the breakdown of the family unit and the general spiritual and moral malaise that results from it. Modern American culture has attacked traditional values and promoted the Cult of the Whim. It’s not too late to reverse this trend. We need to speak up to defend what has made America great and will continue to make it great if we allow it to.
This past week marked the 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s first engagement at the International Hotel (now the Westgate). Jim discusses the history…Contrary to what many believe, this was not Elvis’ first “rodeo” in Vegas. He had appeared in 1956 at the New Frontier (no longer extant), just as his career was taking off. It was a major flop; as Newsweek described it, it was like a jug of corn whiskey at a champagne party.
However, by the late 60s, the landscape had changed. After starring in an increasingly bad string of films, Elvis agreed to do a NBC-TV special in 1968. That special returned him to superstar status, and opened up an opportunity to headline at the brand new International Hotel. He was not the first performer to appear in the new showroom; Barbra Streisand had that honor. But Elvis started a phenomenon (doo doo be doo be!). He played over 600 shows between 1969 and his death in 1977…and every single one sold out. His successful run changed both his career and the entertainment landscape of Las Vegas.
